AI Governance Defined
AI governance is the structured framework overseeing policies, processes, controls, and technologies to ensure that AI applications are lawful, ethical, secure, transparent, and accountable throughout their lifecycle.
- Lawful/compliant;
- Fair, transparent, and explainable;
- Secure/resilient;
- Aligns with enterprise values, risk appetite; and,
- Continually scrutinized and auditable.
Governance is ‘mandatory’ in the AI economy and enterprises are accountable to prove safe, transparent and controlled practices. Governance is the mechanism in place to demonstrate such responsible AI practices. The EU AI Act, local or geo-specific regulations, data protection laws and sectoral regulations stipulate requirements for accountability, human oversight, and risk management. Enterprise AI outside of governance has to face scrutiny, audit exposure, legal ramifications, and regulatory enforcement.

A Governance Architecture: AI Risk Mitigation
Systemic risks such as model drifts, adversarial vulnerabilities, and algorithmic bias can be addressed via AI governance by infusing automated control loops in the ML lifecycle; evolving attacks such as data poisoning, prompt injections can be defended by governance that dictates the use of input-sanitization layers and via red teaming (ethical adversaries to simulate real-world attacks).
